Ideas

Why a salon, and why now

For two centuries, women in Paris and London ran rooms where people came to talk about books, art, and the questions of the day. Not to perform, but to think out loud together. This little site is my attempt at a modern version: short notes, slow attention, and eventually, real evenings in real rooms.

Film

The long take as an act of trust

A shot that refuses to cut asks something of you: stay. Lately I've been collecting films that make that request and noticing how differently I watch when I don't have a phone in my hand.

Objects

What a writing box remembers

Found a Victorian lap desk at an estate sale: ink stains, a hidden drawer, someone's initials scratched under the lid. Objects like this hold the habits of the people who used them. More on what I learned about it soon.

About

I'm Alexis, a filmmaker and collector of old things and good ideas. The Salonnière is named for the women who hosted the salons of France and Victorian England, the hostesses who decided that conversation was an art worth practicing.

Here you'll find short notes on film, art and antiques, and the intellectual and philosophical movements I can't stop reading about. Everything here is meant to be read slowly.
